I am a 2-D mixed media studio artist based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I was born in South Korea and adopted at age three by a family in West Michigan. Since graduating with a BFA from Kendall College of Art and Design, I have been involved in the local art scene over the years. I have been an artist participant in the UICA Live Coverage, the Creston Neighborhood Art Battle, and many others. I am a five-time ArtPrize artist, the 2013 Festival of the Arts Poster Artist, a 2010 Artist in Residence at the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center. Many have formerly known me as Abigail Bradley. As an integral part of my 2016 ArtPrize entry, I announced on October 1st, 2016 that I am reclaiming my Korean surname, Yoo. My new name will be Abigail Yoo to celebrate my Korean American identity. My artwork will have a new signature starting January 1st, 2017.
Creating two-dimensional mixed media artwork is a reflection of the diverse influences I have encountered as an adoptee from Korea, a student of traditional Western art, and a user of ubiquitous computer technology. Modern tools like digital cameras and photo editing tools allow me to creatively experiment in the digital age. I combine traditional art materials, such as paint and paper, in order to retain a sense of tactile authenticity. I use multiple layers and textural effects to depict ethereal dreamlike settings. I strive to create a sense of space even as I play with perspective in abstract ways. This page is a collection of selected paintings and drawings. Enjoy!
