The Federal Building

The Federal Square Building, located at 148 Ionia NW, Grand Rapids, MI was built in 1909. It is the second large structure occupying the The Grand Rapids Post Office and federal offices on the entire block bounded by Ionia, Lyon, Division and Pearl streets.

The view in the painting is from the red brick building located across Ionia St looking toward Pearl. Merizon had a studio in this building in the late 1940's. The studio window is situated over an archway on the second floor of the building with a great view of the comings and goings of the Federal building.

The Post Office moved from the building in 1962 and in 1981 the Grand Rapids Art Museum took up residence in the building and stayed until 2007. Merizon had a major one man show in celebration of the opening of the Burke Porter Gallery in 1986. The gallery was meant to host exhibits for Michigan artists.

In 2011 Ferris State renovated the building for their Kendall School of Design addition.
