The statue was donated to the City by Katherine Aldrich Blake to honor Moses V. Aldrich who was Mayor of Grand Rapids from 1868 through 1870.

It is listed in the Registry of the North American Sundial Society and in Outdoor Sculpture in Grand Rapids by Fay L. Hendry, Okemos MI, Iota Press, 1980. p.99.
