Portrait of Jean

Portrait of Jean Bergsma, wife of Ken Bergsma who was originally a school friend of Merizon and then later his gallery representative at Bergsma Gallery located in the Grand Plaza, Grand Rapids, MI on and off from the 1970's through the early 1990's. The gallery no longer exists. The portrait contains images relevant to Jean such as the lighthouse from Holland, MI, known as Big Red. The Bergsma's owned a cottage, the Owls Nest on Lake Michigan near Lake Macatawa, at which art shows would be held annually during the years of Bergsma Gallery. Daisy's in the foreground could very well have been Jean's favorite flowers. The colorful sailboat on the left serves to add stability to the composition and may have belonged to the Bergsma family. The sky is night on the left and day on the right with an image of Ken above and slightly to the left of Jean"s head.
