Hope College Anchor

Artist: Unknown
Medium: steel, varnished wood
Provenance: A gift of the college's Nu Beta chapter of the national fraternity Alpha Phi Omega, first installed in spring 1965 and rededicated on April 21, 1990.
Notes: An anchor is a key symbol of Hope College, appearing in its official seal. This is in reference to remarks by Rev. Albertus Van Raalte, who founded a school that would evolve into the present-day institution: "This is my anchor of hope for this people in the future." Set into the work's base is a plaque with a Bible passage along similar lines: "We desire that every one of you lay hold of the hope set before us, which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast. Hebrews 6:11, 18, 19."
