The Griffons were donated to the Zoo by Katherine and George Whinery. Katherine Whinery served on the first board of directors of the John Ball Zoological Society and remained on the board until her death in 1998. The pair of griffons had guarded her family home since her father had brought them from Europe early in the 20th Century. They are the work of unknown 15th Century artisans. They were installed in the Welcome Garden in 2012.
